Recently I took ten days off and went to Las Vegas! This was my sixth trip there in the last three years In the last 6 visits I think I have found out some great places to eat gamble and sleep- So I am posting this as my offical Las Vegas Review.

If you have never been to Las Vegas or haven't been there in 2 years than this review will be helpful to you. The city is constantly changing and growing. I love playing Texas Holdem poker online but after playing everday for quite some time it is nice to get away. And it is nice to be able to afford to take a nice vacation like this. Before I became an online poker player as a profession I would never have dreamed of going to Vegas for ten days and satying at one of the most beautiful hotels in the world- The Venetian....

Transportation

On my first trip to Vegas we didn't rent a car. We took a shuttle for 8 bucks from the airport to out hotel and walked or took the bus/ taxis for the rest of the trip. Ever since then we have rented a car. If you go midweek or offseason It is very cheap to rent a car in Vegas. We never payed more than 25 bucks a day. If you add up the cost of taxis and shuttles, it seems much smarter to rent a car.

Beware if you are a timid driver, people drive like maniacs there! If you prefer to get the exercise than the shuttle may be the best bet for you. There are buses every 10 min going up and down the strip, and there are many free mono rail trams going beetween many of the casinos on the strip.

My reccomendation is to rent a car and bring a wad of singles with and valet it. If you are like me you will want to go and see all of the beautiful casinos. There is nothing better than driving to the front door and having it parked. I usually tip a buck or two. Otherwise you can park in the parking structures for free.

Hotels

On my most recent vacation I went with my friend Kurt. Below are some pics of our hotel room at the Venetian. If you can afford to I would highly suggest staying here. It was by far the nicest hotel I have ever been to. The bathroom was HUGE, with a jacuzzi tub, double sink, seperate shower, the toilet was in a seperate room with a phone, marble floors.

Our Room

The Venetian and the Bellagio are the 2 nicest hotels in Las Vegas. They are expensive. I have been to many hotels in Vegas and it all depends on what you want out of your vacation. Most people will gamble and drink into the wee hours of the morning so the hotel won't matter much. If you want to stay at the cheapest hotel possible and stay close to gambling I reccomend staying downtown. I stayed at the Las Vegas Club downtown last year. Midweek you can get a room for 35-45 bucks a night. On that trip we only slept about 10 hours total the 3 nights we were there, so the hotel didnt matter much.

However the Las Vegas Club was pretty nice the rooms were very large thay had a couch. I have stayed at other hotels downtown and most are in that price range and more expensive weekends and peak season. So If you want to be pampered and stay somewhere nice find a hotel on the strip- The Venetian and the Belagio are very nice, and very expensive. The MGM or Luxor or New York are mid priced.. If you want to go cheap stay downtown.

Drinks

If you love to gamble and love to drink PERFECT- If you are gambling drinks are free. So dont spend 8 bucks at the bar, hit the tables or slots and drink on the house.

Gambling

I have gambled at many-a-casino in Vegas. I think on this last 10 day vacation we hit most of them. My suggestion for gambling comes down to preference and cash. On weekends and peak times it is hard to find a blackjack table with a 5 dollar minimum on the strip. Most are ten bucks and up. So If you are on a budget I suggest gambling downtown. They have plenty of five dollar tables and even three dollar tables. They also have single and double deck blackjack games downtown for lower limits. We found most casinos on the strip use auto shufflers and are 6+ decks- This makes for very bad odds. On this trip I mostly played blackjack. I consider online poker my profession and being on vacation I needed a little break. So I played mostly blackjack and the horses.

Some must see casinos are the Venetian, there are shops and the Venice canals, and beautiful paintings and artwork. Also the Belagio is a stunning casino, they have a water show in front set to music. If you are going to bet on horses or sports I suggest the sportsbook at the Belagio. They have personal flat screen TV's leather chairs and they have plenty of cocktail waitreses supplying the drinks. We spent a lot of time here.

Food

Where to eat? We ate so much food on this trip, I must have gained 20 pounds...Lets start out with the buffets:

The best buffet I have ever had is The Spice Market Buffet in the Aladdin Casino. It was around $25 and the food was amazing. They had food in diferent categories, American, Mexican, etc. Everything I tasted was delicious. The fruit they had was fresh, the desserts were amazing. I highly recommend this buffet.

Another great buffet is The Buffet at the Belagio. This buffet was very close in price and taste to the Spice Market buffet. If you like seafood I would recommend this one. They also have Beef Wellingtion, Prime rib and Colby beef, very delicious.

The largest buffet would have to be the buffet at the Rio, The Carnival World Buffet. This buffet was 25-30 bucks. It had a huge selection but I was not impressed with the food.

The worst buffet we had was breakfast at Bally's buffet. The food was not very poor. The Orange juice tasted like Tang.

Non- Buffet Eats

Burger?

The best burger would have to be at The Burger Bar in Mandalay Bay. they have Colby Beef burgers, which are not cheap. Around 16 bucks, but the were very good.

Want a great steak? The best steak I ever ate in Vegas was at Alan Alberts on the strip. It is a very nice restaraunt, great service, great food. Pricey but well worth it if your looking for a mouth watering steak. 3763 Las Vegas Blvd

Italian Food

Want some great Italian food, at a great old school eatery? Try Batista's Hole in the Wall. The restaurant walls are lined with celebrity autograpghed pictures. They even have an accordion player walking from table to table. The food is excellent. Meals come with your choice of wine, a salad, entree and complimentary cappuccino. I had the Chicken parm and it was very good. It was around 20-25 bucks a meal.

Cheap Eats

Lost all your cash at the tables? There are some great deals on meals all over Vegas. Kurt and tried most of them. If you are looking for upscale dining skip this section!

At The Las Vegas Club's Upperdeck downtown- We ate NY strip steak, eggs, hashbrowns and toast for $2.95!!! And it was actually very good.

Another great deal is the Prime rib at San Remos across from the MGM. You get bread, salad, prime rib, baked potato, vegetables all for $5.95. The slice of prime rib was pretty thin but for 6 bucks it was worth it. Another cheap meal we had a few times is, Steak and Lobster dinner at Careful Kitys in the El Cortez downtown. It was like 10 bucks and pretty good.

Bars and Clubs

Wanna hit the clubs? One of my favorites is the Ghost Bar on top of the Palms casino. They filmed MTV's Real World las Vegas at the Palms, and the cast frequented the Ghost bar.. Its part outside on the top of the building. The views of the strip are amazing. Mostly a younger crowd.

Tangerine at Treasure Island was also pretty good. You could also go outside with views of the strip and the Pirate show.

If you run out of cash and still want to get some drinks- go to a sportsbook. Kurt perfected this method! Grab a program and a seat and wait for the cocktail waitress to come around. Make sure to tip her and she will keep coming back!

Las Vegas, my favorite destination doesn't have to cost a fortune. I would consider myself a sharp spender, good with my money... Ok I will admit it I am CHEAP! Over the years I have found some great deals in Las Vegas. Lets start out with my favorite, food.

The cheapest food is found in downtown Las Vegas. I usually start out with a $.99 shrimp cocktail at The Golden Gate Casino downtown. This has been a favorite for years and was recently featured on the travel channel. The casino takes a loss on this one, granted they get it all back at the tables!

Next up on our menu is Steak and Lobster for dinner, or lunch, or even breakfast depending on if you sleep or not. The best deal on this is $7.77 at the Plaza. I also get it at Careful Kity's in The El Cortez down the road. It tastes a little better there, and will run you a whopping $9.99 24 hours a day.

Another great dinner choice is not downtown but on the strip. San Remo's across from the MGM on Tropicana has a great prime rib dinner. $5.99 will get you prime rib, baked potato, bread and a dinner salad. The cut of prime rib isn't huge but its an excellent deal at 6 bucks!

Back downtown for breakfast. The Las Vegas Club's UpperDeck diner has a steak and egg breakfast, with hashbrowns and toast for $2.99. And it is really good.

Buffet Time...There are some great buffets in Vegas, but the great ones are expensive. The best in my opinion is the Spice Market buffet but that will run you 20-30 bucks. Were on a budget so try the buffet at The Gold Coast $6.99, great selectiona and great food.

Now for the drinks, you have to drink in Las Vegas! My method is this- never pay for a drink. If you are gambling they are free. So don't gamble to get a free drink, because its not free if you drop a hundred bucks at the tables. If you are going to gamble anyway then drink away. A great way to get some free drinks is to play the sportbook. You can sit sown with a program, and make a bet or two, or NONE! and get your drinks there. Just remember to take care of the cocktail waitress and she will take care of you.

TRAVEL- The following is my penny pinchers guide to Las Vegas. The best way to cut your vacation costs is to travel cheap. The cheapest flights are mid-week, Tues & Wednesdays are best. If you are “self employed (a professional online poker player who sets his own hours)” Go last minute. There are almost always last minute deals to fill those empty seats. So travel midweek and even better travel off-season. This will cut you total vacation expenses down greatly.

TRANSPORTATION- When in Vegas you can get around for free by walking and using trams. Or you can take the bus, which covers the entire strip and downtown for two bucks a fare. But I found renting a car works best and is sometimes cheaper than taking buses or taxis. If you go midweek you can get a car for 15-20 bucks a day, cheap!

LODGING- The cheapest hotel I can think of is Westward Ho rear. They have some of the lowest rates. Otherwise I usually stay downtown. Midweek you can find a room for around 30-40 bucks.

FOOD- For a buffet try the Gold Coast, its pretty good and only about 7 bucks. When in Vegas you have to try the $.99 Shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate Casino. Want a larger serving? Try a half rack of ribs for less than $5 at the Riveria. The Riveria is also famous for their 3/4lb hot dog. It is HUGE and only cost a $1.49. If you stay at Westward Ho you can get a cup of coffee for a nickel. You can get a 1/2lb burger and fries at Key Largo for $1.99. And back at the Westward Ho for a drink. You can get a 27oz Margarita for $.99.

Increasing numbers of American brides are thinking about doing something that used to be unthinkable -- getting married in a bold red gown.

Not that red is a stranger to marriage. Hardly. Red plays a major role in Chinese, Hindu, and some Muslim weddings, and was a popular choice in medieval times. But for modern Westerners? Yes -- we too are starting to marry in red. At least some of us.

It's been happening more and more in Europe over the past decade. Maybe that's because Europe recalls long stretches of time when wedding gowns weren't white. For eons, a woman simply wore her best dress -- one she could certainly use again -- although to keep luck on her side she might gravitate to certain colors and avoid others. With all the choices, it was harder to keep the good colors straight, so the folk world offered a poem with a few fortunate outcomes and many poor ones:

Married in White, you have chosen right ...
Married in Brown, you will live in the town ...
Married in Blue, you will always be true ...

Blue gowns were popular since early times, since blue represented purity and the Virgin Mary. This tradition continues in the "something blue" a bride wears today. White was less common, especially among anything other than the bluest bluebloods, because of its difficulty in coming clean in the wash.

But eventually, several big players popularized white, most notably the fashion hound Queen Victoria. Ever since -- especially in a world where clothes are mass-produced and a woman can afford many dresses, even one she'll only wear once -- white's been all the rage.

Yet even more recently, some have found this timeworn symbol of purity and affluence a little constricting. Some brides want a little less predictability and more choice. And not everyone looks good in white, as some brides point out.

While a percentage of European brides have snapped up dramatic red gowns for the past decade, Americans have been more cautious. It's only been about the past four years that tentative pastel washes and small colored accents have made the scene here.

That's beginning to change. A small but growing number of brides -- and designers -- are getting bolder. Formal, stunning, all-red gowns are making inroads into Christmas or holiday weddings, especially the cozy kind in front of a crackling hearth. You'll see more red at Valentine weddings, rose-themed weddings, and Las Vegas weddings -- not to mention second weddings where the bride's more apt to select exactly what she feels good in, and nothing less.

Thinking of red for yourself? Maybe your forebears did too. During the American Revolution, it wasn't uncommon for brides show their support for the rebellion by donning a red dress.

Fortunately, these days it's not a political statement. A bride wears red because she wants to. She's comfortable with herself and with the dress she finds most beautiful -- even if that choice still raises some eyebrows in the back of the chapel.

In my opinion, the Las Vegas area is one of the nicest places in the Western US and falling in love with Las Vegas is easy to do. This town is "The Entertainment Capital of the World" the city welcomes 37.5 million people a year. Visitors love to enjoy dazzling shows, five star hotels, first rate nightclubs, unique shopping experiences, world class gaming, and plenty of Las Vegas coupons.

There is a lot to see and do besides gambling: You can rent a car and visit the desert sights, such as Red Rock Canyon and Valley of Fire. A drive from Vegas to Valley of Fire is about 1 hour and you can return via Hoover Dam. This makes for a nice 1/2 to 1 day trip, depending on how long you want to spend in the Valley or at the Dam. There's Lake Mead, with boat rentals, picnic areas, etc. They also offer raft trips down the Colorado River. Mt. Charleston offers cooler weather, horseback riding, picnic areas, camping, etc. As far as shopping, there are three discount outlet malls in Vegas plus several shopping malls. The Fashion Place Mall is huge, and is on the strip as well as the shopping at Caesars Palace and the huge shopping at Aladdin's mall. Las Vegas has excellent restaurants, golf, hot air balloon rides and other outdoor activities. And if you're into theme parks, some great rides are available right on the Strip. If you want to stay at hotels with limited gambling, try Lake Las Vegas... just 20 minutes from the Strip but worlds apart.

There is also a lot of cheap entertainment. Look in the local newspaper ads for two for one coupons and also go to the promotion desks at the hotels, ask if they are giving any comp tickets. Rio does all the time! Have a great time!

I just got back from Las Vegas!

Man oh man, it was my first visit ever, and let me tell y’all, if there was ever a town I fell in love with at first glance, it’s Las Vegas! It has The Brotherhood’s name written all over it, in fact, if there ever was ever a town that I’ll need to visit regularly for the rest of my life after only one visit, it’s Las Vegas!

I went out there for a speaking engagement related to some of my writing activities. Even though I spoke for only twenty minutes in a tiny conference room in one of the big strip hotels, I can now say, for all eternity, that “I’ve played Vegas!” I was out there for all of two days, which now makes me a certified Vegas authority. And because I’m now so knowledgeable, here’s some unique things y’all can expect to see if you ever make a trip out there:

1. Some huge hotels - I thought I had seen some large hotels in places like New York City and Chicago, but nothing compares to these big mamas out in Vegas. You have the Luxor, which literally looks like a pyramid with a light shining out of the top. You have Mandalay Bay, well, actually there are two Mandalay Bays now, and they both have copper colored windows in their rooms. They also have eleven acres of swimming pools and a huge shark aquarium. The owner of Mandalay Bay obviously likes fish, and probably also likes having a little something on the property to help keep the guests in line. Let’s also not forget Caesar’s Palace, which is huge, and the Venetian, which is even larger. There’s one place called Excaliber that looks like a castle because one actually sits right at the entrance to it, Paris Las Vegas has a replica of the Eiffel Tower standing right next to it, one called the Stratosphere has an 1100 foot tower built close by (get this, there’s a roller coaster on top of it), and the grandest Vegas hotel of them all is the Bellagio. Collectively, these have to be the most unique hotels in the world.

2. More gambling than you could ever imagine - every big motel has a casino, and you can’t get to anything without going through the casino first. I’m serious, if you want to go to your room, you’ve gotta go through the casino, if you want to eat at a motel restaurant, you’ve gotta go through the casino, and remember this - if you need to go to the bathroom, don’t wait til it’s leg quivering time to go, because you’ll have to go through the casino to get to it as well. Something tells me that those Vegas motel security people won’t like guests who whiz all over their carpets or slot machines.

3. Women, women, and women! There’s something unusual goin’ on in Vegas, something I can’t quite explain but still want to tell y’all about. The women in Vegas must be extra friendly, and the reason I know that is that they actually have people standing out on the streets handing out cards with their names and telephone numbers on them. Isn’t that the friendliest thing you‘ve ever heard of? Where else could you go and experience hospitality like this? How Vegas has managed to get so many friendly women all in one place is something I‘ll never figure out...

4. The shows! I saw Little Richard in the Orleans Motel and Casino Showroom, and man was he was great! Also performing on the strip were Gladys Knight, Celine Dion, a whole bunch of Elvis impersonators, and many, many more top flight entertainers. There were also some topless reviews, as they like to get naked at some of these Vegas clubs, but being the highly conservative type person that I am I didn’t dare visit any of them. Topless women, the nerve!

Folks, I’m already at the end of this column and I’m still just getting started, I haven’t even mentioned the great food, the thrill rides, the sightseeing, and a whole lot more. Because of that, I’m already in close consultation with Brothers Pippin and Foskey regarding the planning for our first ever Brotherhood visit to Las Vegas. Right now we’re envisioning this as a yearly type ritual, but that‘s always up for negotiation, to do the proper research we may need several trips out there every year. Can y’all imagine Hugh, the Pip, and I all together out on the Vegas strip? Out in the middle of Sin City? I sure can!

If you are actually planning your Las Vegas wedding reception, you're already a step ahead of a lot of people who get married in Vegas! All kidding aside - this is certainly a momentous occasion, and for your wedding reception Las Vegas has the expertise to make it perfect.

In Las Vegas, wedding receptions of all flavors are a very familiar request, so most hotels have full-time staff dedicated to helping people like you plan and prepare for the event. Moreover, Las Vegas boasts some of the most ornate hotels of any place in the world. Large banquet halls are easily decorated to suit any theme, and certain amenities (like slot machines) are simply not available in most other cities.

Be very careful not to get charged a premium rate for mediocre service. The person you deal with to book your wedding reception site could easily assume you've just hit a million-dollar jackpot and start the price negotions from there. If you would rather not confine your gathering to an indoor reception hall, there are a select few outdoor sites suitable for staging a Las Vegas wedding reception. The Grove in North Las Vegas and The Las Vegas Racquet Club's Secret Garden on the south end of the strip both offer all-inclusive packages to host your wedding ceremony and reception on their scenic expanses of gardened lawn. And for convenient after-party fun, they are just a few minutes from all the action of the main strip.

Not everybody will be able to attend your Las Vegas wedding reception, but they can still be there in spirit! Something that has become very easy in recent years is to set up web cams to broadcast the wedding ceremony and reception over the Internet. It really is worth considering, because you can save thousands of dollars if enough of your more "distant" friends and relatives can settle for viewing your virtual wedding online. Isn't technology great? Some hosts are more tech-savvy than others, so be sure to inquire about this service before assuming it can be provided as part of the package.

Who Will Be The Top Dog at WSOP?
That is the question on everyone's mind as the 2005 World Series of Poker enters its third round with only 272 top poker players remaining.

Of the over 5600 entrants who entered the esteemed Las Vegas held tournament at a buy-in of $10 000 each, most walked away with nothing as only the last 560 players qualify for cash prizes.

However, for those players whose luck and skill saw them survive the first four gruelling days, the big prize is still very much on the horizon as they continue to battle it out in no-limit Texas Hold 'em poker.

Their objective is a common one - to make to the final table of nine players and beat out the opposition to walk away the winner of the 2005 tournament and $7.5 million richer.

The current chip leader is Las Vegas resident, Rod Pardey Jr who is sitting on just over $700 000 in chips. Still in the picture is the resilient Greg 'Fossilman' Raymer, who won last year's WSOP. His stack is about $700 000. 1994 WSOP victor, Russ Hamilton, is also still in the running.

Other big poker names remaining in the field include Howard Lederer, Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Mike Matusow, Layne Flack and Paul Darden.

Do you think the only thing to do in Las Vegas is gamble? Would
you believe that there are a multitude of great hiking trails in
a place where all-you-can-eat casino buffets are par for the
course? Southern Nevada is chock full of great hiking trails
ready to be discovered. Hiking areas near Las Vegas include:
Red Rock, Mt. Charleston, Lake Mead, and the Eastern Sierra.
These hiking trails are interspersed between canyons, mountains,
chutes, and gullies.

Red Rock: Red Rock is located 20 miles west of Las Vegas. The
hiking trails range between 1-12 miles and can accommodate
hikers of any skill level. Camping is available. Currently, it
costs $5 per car and $20 for a yearly pass.

Mt. Charleston: Mt. Charleston is 35 miles northwest of Las
Vegas. It is filled with mountainous terrain. Mt. Charleston
has summer temperatures that are nearly 30 degrees cooler then
Las Vegas. The hiking trails range from 1-20 miles and will
bode well for beginning to advanced hikers. Currently, it costs
$6 per car.

Lake Mead: Lake Mead is 20 miles east of Las Vegas. Lake Mead
is an easy hike. It is generally 10 degrees warmer than Las
Vegas. Therefore, consider hiking Lake Mead during the winter
months. There are hot springs and eye-catching rock formations
to admire while hiking around Lake Mead. The hiking trails are
1-15 miles long. Currently, it costs $5 for certain hikes.

Eastern Sierra: The Eastern Sierra mountain range is a 3.5 hour
drive from Las Vegas. It is worth the drive when you experience
the many peaks it has to offer. The highest peak is Mt. Whitney
which stands at 14,494 feet. There are numerous trails to
choose from that explore the peaks that make up the Eastern
Sierra mountain range. The trails range from 1-20 miles long.
There is no entrance fee. However, some of the trails require
permits while others do not. Also, be aware that the Eastern
Sierra mountain range is home to a bear population so take
precautions when hiking and camping.

So turn in your poker chips and skip the slot machines when you
head to Las Vegas. The area has many spectacular hiking trails
to offer. Try hiking in fall, winter, or spring because Las
Vegas has sweltering heat in the summer. Take in the fresh air
and rocky scenery of Las Vegas area hiking trails. They are a
little known secret waiting for you to discover them.

Las Vegas is celebrating its 100th Birthday this year.

What would it take to entice people to an arid, dusty, brown spot of the country? A land auction started it off, in May of 1905 you could buy a parcel of Clark's Las Vegas Town site for $200.00, these were exceptionally far-sighted people if you ask me. First of all can you imagine being in Las Vegas in the early 1900's without air conditioning? This was not a deterrent to these "hardy" pioneers. Just one-year later Miller's Hotel was built and the rush was on, because after all now people had a place to stay. Miller's was on the corner of Fremont and Main. Today, renamed The Golden Gate Hotel, in deference to the earthquake that nearly destroyed San Francisco in 1906 still stands on the corner of Fremont and Main and they still serve their signature "99 cent shrimp cocktail", which is a much better bet that it was in those days.

Las Vegas was incorporated in 1911, gambling, drinking and prostitution were declared illegal...but divorce was not and in the 1920's dude ranches started popping up around Reno, the rich and famous could establish residency for six weeks and get "unhitched" from whatever mate they may have had. This was the publicity that started to put Nevada into the limelight.

Another big attraction occurred when gambling was legalized in the early 1930s. The government started work on Hoover Dan and brought thousands of workers to the area. Just think about being stuck in the middle of the desert with nothing to do with your money, so bars and casinos were thoughtfully provided.

In the early 1940s, what would become know as "The Strip" was a 3 mile stretch of Highway 91, on the new road to and from California. El Rancho was the very first casino to open in 1941 on what would later become know as "The Strip". Their address was Highway 91, Las Vegas Nevada with their "Opera House" theater restaurant, and "Monte Carlo" casino...and also in 1941, El Cortez opened in what is today downtown Las Vegas. El Cortez advertised that they were "Big enough to serve you - Small enough to want to". How's that for an advertising slogan? They also touted a Coffee Shop, Casino, Cocktail Lounge and Bar, and Complete Dinners from $2.95 In the meantime, back on "The Strip", the New Frontier opened in 1942 and The Flamingo, Bugsy Siegel's dream opened in 1946. Las Vegas was on its way.

The next major milestone for Nevada was Atom Bomb Testing, this brought scads of tourists to Vegas in the 1950s, they also discovered Las Vegas, along with the mushroom clouds. Vegas Vic, the neon cowboy on Fremont Street would just wave them on in.

The 1960s were the glamour days in Las Vegas, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis and the Rat Pack ruled supreme. The days of cigarettes and martinis (not the glorified watered down ones of today) but the real stuff, where even a drop of vermouth might be too much! Everybody dressed in beautiful clothes; it was the order of the day, no jeans, no shorts, just elegance and sophistication. No kids either! Sinning was in full gear, maybe not out and out, as it was to become in the 1970s, but perhaps more exciting than even today. The lounge lizards were out in force as well, nothing could top sitting in the lounges after the last headliner show and watching the likes of Louis Prima, Keeley Smith or Sam Buterra. It was truly a special time in Las Vegas history. Before the mega hotels or resorts, before the corporations. Great deals on food and rooms.

The 1970s ushered in the "new era" of Vegas. Circus Circus opened in 1968, built a 15-story, 400-room hotel tower and 850-seat showroom that opened in 1972. The International Hotel with 1500 rooms opened in 1971, only to be sold to Hilton. It re-opened in 1973 as the MGM Grand Hotel. The MGM Grand had a newly built 26 story tower that housed 2,084 rooms and with 2.5 million square feet and a 2,000-seat showroom set the new standard in defining mega-resort. Nothing was as thrilling as arriving under the marquee with thousands of lights beaming down. Corporate money had entered the scene. The 70s also ushered in the days of Elvis and his long-term performances.

In the 1980s, a new name came on the scene in the guise of Steve Wynn who ushered in a wave of luxurious hotels and casinos, as the world had never seen. The Mirage opened in 1989 and Steve Wynn's name went down in history.

Baby Boomers who had kids in tow by the 1990s thought it would be great fun to take their kids to Vegas. The hotels responded and built "kid friendly" attractions. Wet n Wild water slides, cartoon characters, humongous swimming pools and video arcades ushered in the "kiddies era". Hello, what was everyone thinking? If you're pushing baby strollers you sure aren't gambling and you've changed the atmosphere from exciting and different to old hometown. The Bellagio Hotel (another Steve Wynn masterpiece) opened in 1998 (with the distinction of being the most expensive hotel - at the time) banned any persons under age 18 who were not registered guests of the hotel. The Stratosphere hotel (tallest building west of the Mississippi) opened in 1996. 1997 brought New York, New York with its roller coaster. Mandalay Bay opened in 1999 with 3,300 rooms. In 1999, phase one of the Venetian Resort-Hotel-Casino opened with 3,036 suites. And in 1999 Paris Las Vegas Casino opened.

Rod Stewart, Bette Middler and Tina Turner, Las Vegas "Boy Wonder" Wayne Newton and other notable stars ushered in the millennium.

With the long awaited opening of Wynn Las Vegas, Steve Wynn scores once again with a new level of opulence, this may not be the biggest hotel in town, but it's the only one with a full-service Ferrari and Maserati dealership and it's own museum and art collection. Wynn also features a 100-foot mountain overlooking a 3-acre lake, what must Howard Hughes be thinking?

The turn of the century has brought Las Vegas back to its senses, once again sin is in, the main attraction is alive and well! Who knows what the next hundred years will bring?

The 2005 World Series of Poker started its 36th year bigger and better than ever at the RIO! Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the mid point of the tournament series, Events #1 through #22 have been completed. If you were not fortunate enough to be in Las Vegas for this mega event, here are some of the updates, results and highlights for you.

Records were being made from the start as 662 casino employees entered Event #1 which was the "Casino Employee No-limit Hold'Em" tournament. The number broke the record set last year, which was 279 entrants. Andy Nguyen, a poker dealer from Binion’s in Las Vegas, won this event earning a payday of $83,390. Things really picked up as Event #2 "No-Limit Texas Hold'Em" began with an astounding 2,305 players signing up to play. For comparison, the 2004 WSOP Main Event had 2,576 players in it. Allen Cunningham was the recipient of a WSOP gold bracelet and $725,405 for winning this one. Event #3 "Pot-Limit Hold'Em" had Thom Werthmann pocketing $369,535 by overcoming tough play from Layne Flack in the heads up match at the final table. Another WSOP record was set when 21 year old Eric Froehlich became the youngest person to earn a WSOP championship bracelet by winning Event #4 "Limit Hold'Em" and an additional $361,910 for his efforts. Pat Poels who quit his full time job to become a professional poker player won event #5 "Omaha Hi-Low Split". His paycheck that day was $270,100. Isaac Galazan won Event #6 "No-limit Hold'Em" a shootout tournament by defeating a determined Harry Demetriou and took home $315,125 for becoming champion.

Event #7 "No-Limit Hold'Em with Rebuys" was won by 24 year old poker tournament millionaire Michael Gracz, picking up an additional $594,460 for the win. But Michael said he would give up all the winnings just to have the WSOP bracelet, that's how much it meant to him. Event #8 "Seven Card Stud" had online qualifier Cliff Josephy claim the victory and $192,100. Erik Seidel picked up his 6th WSOP bracelet and $611,795 after winning the Event #9 "No-Limit Hold'Em" tournament. Reza Payvar who saw a marathon 13 hour heads up match to the end, won Event #10 "Limit Hold'Em". Reza, who received $303,610 and a WSOP bracelet, stated he dedicated the win to his father who passed away last year. Reza missed the 2004 WSOP to be with his father who had cancer. Online qualifier Edward Moncada won Event #11 "Pot-Limit Hold'Em" receiving his first WSOP bracelet and $298,070. The winner of Event #12 "Pot Limit Omaha" was Josh Arieh who earned his 2nd gold WSOP bracelet along with a $381,600 payday.

In his 58th major tournament win, T.J. Cloutier picked up his 6th WSOP bracelet by winning the Event #13 "No Limit Hold'Em" event and pocketing $657,100 in the process. Event #14 "Seven-Card Stud High-Low Split" lasted 36 hours, but in the end Steve Hohn picked up his bracelet and $156,985. Steve even endured a 4 1/2- hour heads up battle with Mike Wattel at the final table to capture this tournament victory! Mark Seif was able to place a desired crown on his poker resume by winning Event #15 "Limit Hold'Em Shootout" and $181,330 in his wallet. The champion for the Event #16 "No-Limit Hold'Em Shootout" tournament was Anthony Reategui, proving himself the best of 780 players for the title of champion and $269,100. Quinn Do ended up with $265,975 for winning Event #17's "Limit Hold'Em" tournament. Denis Ethier came from behind as the final table's short stack to win Event #18 "Seven Card Stud High-Low Split". Denis was rewarded with $160,682 for his effort. And Barry Greenstein became the champion of the Event #19 "Pot Limit Omaha" tournament gaining another $423,405 and a bracelet. Barry in his true humanitarian form dedicated his win to a terminally ill cancer patient named Charlie Tuttle. For Event #20 which was "Pot Limit Hold'Em", Brian Wilson won $370,685 for his efforts at the WSOP.

Todd Brunson, son of Doyle Brunson was the winner of the Event #21 "Omaha High-Low Split" tournament. Todd won $255,945 and entered World Series of Poker history, as he and his father became the only father and son to win championship bracelets. And Mark Seif captured his 2nd WSOP bracelet in a week plus $611,145 to boot by winning the Event #22 "No-Limit Hold'Em" tournament.

With an unprecedented number of players participating, it seems records are being broken and WSOP history is being rewritten almost daily. Recently the WSOP officials revised their total prize pool estimate from $60,000,000 to $100,000,000 because the amount of people entering the tournaments has surpassed even their highest expectations. When this tournament series becomes televised, the world will have a lot to watch.

"I'm older than you think. In fact you're probably not more than five years older than me." She chuckled, as one of the other patrons who was standing nearby joined in.

"It isn't usual to hear a woman bragging about how old she is. Do you always have this effect on people, Mr. Black Hat?" A woman of about thirty with long red hair commented.

"I do seem to cause some extreme reactions in many situations. I guess it must be because I'm a REAL red-head! Ha-ha."

"I suppose you want to see if I'm a REAL red-head." She smiled with a wicked and mischievous grin that Bob returned, just as Sean came back and stood between them.

"I can't leave you alone for a minute; can I Bob? SO who is this beauty you've struck up an acquaintance with? My name is Sean." Sean was shaking her hand as she looked him over.
"I had been thinking he was your father, but now I see you are much better looking and he couldn't be related to YOU! My name is Bonnie Brown, and I love that accent!"

"Bonnie was just suggesting that I might want to know what even her hairdresser doesn't. Maybe you could take her up on that offer." Bob was close to laughing out loud.

"I was not! He is a 'rude dude', why don't we go sit somewhere else Sean?" Bonnie responded angrily.

"Please, Sean. See what she wants. I'm OK here for a while. Take your drink with you." Bob held his drink out for Sean to take.

"Bonnie, I don't know why the two of you choose to be doing what you are doing. I would be happy to talk with you and explore the possibilities but I don't see any reason to make enemies. If I get him to promise not to be rude will you stay and continue our discussion?"

"You look and sound so DELICIOUS. I would do anything for you! Why don't we go out to my car and discuss it in private?"
"I think I see why Bob was acting the way he was Bonnie. I'm sure there are lots of people who would be happy to take you up on your offer. I am not inclined to do that with someone I don't know. I'm sorry."

"You might very well be sorry later. I want you to know I am a mortgage banker and a professional who doesn't waste time 'beating around the bush'; if I like something I 'go for it'.”

"Sounds delightful, Bonnie. I am inclined to look for something a little more meaningful when I engage in sex, however. Perhaps what you are doing works for you. It doesn't work with me!"

Sean turned to smile at Bob as Bonnie walked to the other side of the bar. "Wow! American women can be pretty forward!"

"I think Swedish women are forward. She is sick. You handled the situation very well and much more politely than I was doing. I am impressed."

"I was too!" A blond girl of about 25 who was standing near the gas pump in the corner offered.

"My name is Susan; may I join the two of you?" She began to take Bonnie's barstool as Bob and Sean admired her whole appearance. Her face was sculpted with smooth lines and style.

"This is Sean; he is from New Zealand and doing a world tour until he decided to stay here in Las Vegas. I'm Bob, and I just moved here from L.A., but I'm originally from Canada. Are you from Las Vegas, Susan?"

"No, but I've been here for a couple of years working as a show girl and trying to get a singing career together. I'm from Florida originally."

“You have wonderful warmth in your voice!" Sean remarked with apparent admiration. "Is that the famous Southern Drawl I've heard about?"

"Her drawl is much better than most, Sean." Bob offered as he saw the two of them were attracted to each other and got up. "I think I'll go get something to eat at the buffet. Would you like some Susan?"

"I'll have some of Sean's stuff here." Susan was definitely what Sean needed. When Bob returned he noticed they were enjoying each other immensely and he reminded Sean that he would be picking him up at four in the morning. "You can sleep on the way to L.A. if you want, but you must be ready. I think I'll go and get rested up. Susan, it was nice meeting you! I hope we'll meet again sometime. He needs to be shown the best that Las Vegas has to offer and I hope you are the one to do it."

"What do you suggest, Bob?"

"I think Cirque du Soleil is a good show, and maybe you could take him to the 'Follies' or wherever you work."

"Yes, that is where I work! Thanks Bob! I look forward to seeing you again, too." Susan stood and gave him a hug after he shook hands with Sean. Sean thanked Bob with a big smile on his face. On his way out Bob looked back and saw them engaged in getting ready to go to the shows.

"Sean, I think your eyes look almost like Paul Newman's. I love them and I hope you are as great a man as he is."

"Have you met HIM?!”

"Yes. I was introduced as the lead dancer in a program he was attending as a fund-raiser."

"Tell me all about yourself; you must have an exciting life!"

"Well, I think it would be best if we head over to the Mirage and get to know each other on the way. Did you bring your car?"

"No, I just decided to stay here this morning or late last night. We were up very late." They both stood to get on their way and Sean made sure he pulled her chair out for her.

"Thank you very much! I don't always need a gentleman, but it is nice for a change... Do you know anything about Cirque?" Sean responded with a mutter as he saw her strong legs and fantastic shape in front of him. He told himself to be cool and not to get too excited. As he dashed ahead of her to get the door on their way out, Susan stopped him and gave him a little kiss. "I don't want you to treat me as some kind of goddess, Sean. Just be yourself."

"I am used to opening doors for ladies. That is how my parents raised me, and besides I like getting the chance to look at your face."

"How do you like 'Lost Wages'? Sean?"

"I'm getting to know it and I am a very lucky person! Bob and some other people I met last night are the MOST incredible people I have ever met. I get to meet a lot of important people; my father is a 'big wig' in New Zealand." They stopped at a Mitsubishi 3000 GT. It was black and fast looking. Sean was impressed by the newness and beauty of the car. "I love the look of these cars! I hope you let me drive it sometime."

He opened the driver's door for her and gave her a kiss once she was seated in the front seat, before rushing around to get in the other door. "So Susan, I want to know all about you!" He said while doing his seatbelt up.

"OK. Here is the five minute synopsis. I am 26, a Virgo and I'll graduate with a Master's in Psychology in January. I own my own home in Summerlin and I have a Persian cat named Carmelita. My last name is Del Balso, and I grew up in Boca Raton. My father died a couple of years ago, but he wasn't an important part of my life for most of it. We had some problems that I don't wish to go into right now. I love all kinds of music and I sing pop music in a band occasionally. There are many things I enjoy but creativity and cleanliness are the tops with me. I think I'm going to get my doctorate while I establish a growing practice dealing with family violence."

"That is 'fantastic'! WE might be able to work something out with you. I can't tell you all the details but we are starting a sensual emporium of spiritual delights and need someone to help the performers with psychological problems. It will include an Oriental acupressure massage and herbal store as well as a psychic bookstore and a strip club. It won't be like any such club that anyone in these parts has ever seen. Our purpose is to help people understand and enjoy their sexuality. It will include a sex toy/clothing shop and lots of other things, like yoga sessions and intellectual meetings. Bob says the Playboy Club had some of these things when it started."

"That sounds exciting! Will you have musical performers on occasion, like the Playboy Club? Here we are; I'll leave the car with the attendant and we need to hurry if we hope to get the best seats the floor manager has available."

"Don't we go to the ticket counter?" Sean asked as he followed.

"I almost never have to pay for any entertainment, except at New Year's or the Computer Show." They went to the Floor Manager directly and before they got close to him he was waving and beckoning to Susan. Sean felt like a 'star' even though he was just along for the ride. He noticed many people had a hard time keeping their eyes off Susan, and it made him feel more important than he thought it would. "This is Sean, my date! He's moving here from New Zealand and I want him to see the best show in town!" Susan spoke as if there was no chance she wouldn't get her request answered as she wanted. A crowd of other employees and patrons were standing near her and asking each other who she was, or talking about her performing skills. They got seats about eye level with the performers, and Sean thought they were the best seats in the house. When they were seated Susan leaned against him and he put his arm around her shoulders.

"I have never been with a 'star'; pardon my excitement."

"I can see there are a few things I'll have to teach you, but I imagine you'll be able to show me a thing or three, too." Susan looked up at him and pursed her full luscious red lips. He kissed her sweetly at first and then his hand moved to the side of her neck as his tongue flicked across her lips. She responded with passion and a touch on the inside of his leg just as the lights went down and the circus began. At the end of the show Sean was thinking how much more he needed to know about what love can be before he committed to any one person. He knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that what he felt with Susan could grow into something awesome and he was not sure he could imagine that ever happening with Carolyn. He also knew they had never really experienced a lot together either. His thoughts were interrupted by a squeeze on his knee, and he looked to see Susan looking into his baby blues.

“I love your eyes! Did I tell you that?"

"Yes, but don't think for an instant that I don't want to hear anything you have to say about such things. Because I am absolutely 'blown away' by YOU!" They stood and a natural hug occurred without either of them having to think about it. As they went into the casino Sean saw it was a little after eleven and he knew he had to get up in four hours and hadn't slept much the night before. "I don't want to be away from you but I do need to get a little rest. If there is any chance that you aren't sure WE have to get together again, I will hang around you and do whatever I can to change your mind!"

"Sean, I must tell you this. I don't like to play games. I have a boyfriend, but we aren't getting along right now. I think you are the kind of person that I could LOVE in a way that I have never LOVED anyone before. I am close to being infatuated with you, too."

"God. That sounds so… FANTASTIC!!" Their lips met without Susan having to stand on her tip toes. Sean held her around her tiny waist and felt her large firm butt beneath his hands. He almost felt dizzy as the kiss continued and he had to put his arm out to brace himself against the wall.

"Where are you staying?" Susan made a low and guttural purr.

"Here… on the tenth floor!"

"Can I walk you to your room?" Susan said as they separated.

"Yes, I guess so. I must tell you something first though." Susan took his hand and led him to the elevator as he spoke. "Before I came on this world tour I was engaged to someone I hardly know. Our parents are both from very important families and we have grown up knowing that we were supposed to be together or that it was a likely outcome. I talked to her last night and we both agreed that is stupid and almost feudal."

"I see." Susan took her hand away from his and then put it back. "I guess you need some time to think about whether or not you and I should get too involved, then."

They entered the elevator with other people and Sean was nearly beside himself. He wanted to stop the elevator and kiss Susan with all his heart. He didn't want her to think he wasn't able to be FREE to love her in whatever way she wanted. "I loved the artistry of the show! Have you seen it many times before?"

"Yes, I've seen it four times now, but it is so good I enjoy it more each time. I really appreciate every movement their bodies make and how difficult it is, the more I see them."

They left the elevator together and waited till other people passed by them, before they kissed. There was no one to see them as they slowly kissed. Sean looked into her dark eyes and felt her pull him closer as she returned the energy of his deep gaze. When he nibbled lightly on her lower lip after sucking it for a minute he reached up to just beneath her breasts. She pushed them into his chest and put her hand behind his head. Just then the elevator opened again on its way down. "No. Please come to my room!" Sean said as a moment of fear gripped him. "I don't want you to leave!"

"Are you afraid we won't see each other again?"

"A little! I know I would be a fool to let you go without making ABSOLUTELY sure that we are going to have a chance to get to know each other better."

‘Blackjack’ is one of the oldest games played in United States of America. Generally it is believed that the game got its name from the manner in which it is played. When a player had a jack along with an ace of spade in the first hand, the player was paid extra money. So, in this game the black spades are as crucial as jacks. From this it was termed as ‘Blackjack’. The origination of the game can be traced back to world war I, when the game was quite popular among the troops since it had the benefit to be played at any time and anywhere. Now the game has entered all the casinos and has a huge fan following. Blackjack beat Faro is largely adored and played in the casinos of Las Vegas and Reno.

The Game-
This game is played by more than a few players on a horseshoe kind of table. The base player is the one who is at the end to the dealer’s right. The initial step will be the shuffling of the cards by the dealer. Later you are supposed to cut the cards with a card sized piece of plastic by sliding it between the deck of cards. The dealer will lift the cards above the plastic along with the plastic to place them below the deck. A cautious eye at the placement activity of dealer will be helpful in the game. Next, the top card is set aside by the dealer in order to avoid any kind of cheating in the game. This is known as the burning of the card. This is followed by the dealer’s putting a colored card at about the third way from the bottom of the deck and placement of another card at the last place i.e. at the bottom of the deck.

If the table is full, it signifies an already commenced game. You ask for the chips to play the game and make a bet, which should match at least the minimum bet for the game. Its at the player’s discretion to decide if he wants to with big or small bets and the table accordingly. The dealer deals each player a card face up. The final card that the dealer receives is face down and is known as the ‘hole card’. Then each player is given a face up card as his second card. The value of this second card is the measure to decide whether to take further cards or not. After all players complete their hands ultimately the dealer selects the dealer card for completing the dealer’s hand.

The winner-
The person who is crowned as the winner is the one who has a higher total than the dealer without braking 21. In other words, he comes closest to 21 without exceeding or lagging behind too much. The stand off situation is that when the player and the dealer have the same total and so there is no winner and so no loser.

When you bet, keep this strategy in mind that you have to get 21 on your first two cards. There are various pay off ratios like 2:3 etc. at different casinos. Similarly there are other features attached to the betting process like ‘insurance’ etc. It is advisable to have a prior knowledge of the rules of the game and its betting strategies.

Gymnastics Olympics Champions From 1988-2004

Here are the men’s and women’s all-around champions from the
last five Olympic Games -- these are just brief
biographies, but they surely give you an idea of your
gymnast’s potential.

2004 Paul Hamm, Carly Patterson

Paul Hamm, the 2004 men’s all-around champion in
gymnastics, was born on September 24, 1982, and has a twin
brother by the name of Morgan. Paul was the first
American man to take the gold for the all-around
competition in a fully attended Olympic Game. He is
noteworthy for some controversy surrounding his title.

Carly Patterson was born on February the fourth, 1988, in
Baton Rouge,Louisiana, to a pair of loving parents - her
mother, Natalie, and her father, Ricky. She is the first
of a pair of girls (her younger sister is Jordan). In
2004, she became the first all-around Olympic champion for
the United States in more than two decades, and was also
the first to win for the US in the past two games. The
last female all-around gymnastics champion for the United
States won in 1984, when the Soviet Union had boycotted the
Olympics entirely.

2000 Andreea Raducan, Alexei Nemov

Andreea Madalina Raducan was born on the thirtieth of
September, 1983, in Birlad, Romania. She was trained under
Octavien Belu and Mariana Bitang of the Cetate Deva Club in
Romania and began gymnastics at the age of five. She has
several gold and silver medals under her belt from national
and international competitions. Though she is listed as
the official Olympic all-around female champion, the IOC
stripped her of her medal when she tested positive for
pseudophedrine (the active ingredient in many
decongestants) after having taken a cold pill given to her
by the Romanian Olympic Team doctor. Regardless of whether
or not she has the medal, she is a champion - and an
incredible one at that.

Alexei Nemov is considered to be one of the best male
gymnasts in the world, as well as being a pin-up for the girls.
He was born on May 28th, 1976, in Barashevo, Russia. His
start on gymnastics started early. At the age of five, his
mother took him to the local gym, thinking that gymnastics
would be an acceptable alternative to a more violent sport.
He has had his ups and downs in gymnastics -- namely, with
many injuries to his arms and shoulders -- but left the
Atlanta and Sydney Olympics with six medals each. In 2000,
he was crowned the men’s all-around gymnastics champion and
bore his gold medal proudly.

1996 Li Xiaoshuang, Lilia Podkopayeva

Li Xiaoshuang, men’s all-around gymnastics champion in the
1996 Olympics, was born on November 1, 1973, in Xintao,
Hubei Province, China. His career has been marked with
many successes. At the age of seven, he took up
gymnastics; two years later, he was part of his provincial
team, and at twelve years of age, he was part of the
Chinese national gymnastics team. He has won many gold
medals in his time, including two from separate Olympic
games - 1992 and 1996 - and three from the World Gymnastics
Championships. In 1995, he was awarded the well-deserved
title of International Master of Sports and continues, to
this date, to impress.

Lilia Podkopayeva was born on August 15, 1978 in Donestk,
Ukraine. Her coach, Galina Lossinskaya, brought her
through more than ten competitions all together, in which
she fared well. In the 1996 Atlanta Georgia Olympic Games,
she placed first in the all-around women’s competition and
since then has toured the United States in the John Hancock
Tour of World Gymnastics Champions.

1992 Tatiana Gutsu, Vitaly Scherbo

Tatiana Gutsu, women’s all-around champion in the 1992
Olympics, has an excellent record of performance. She was
born on the fifty of September, 1976 in the Soviet Union,
and was selected at a very young age by her coach and
trainer, Victor Dikii. In the 1992 Olympics, her career
became tarnished by conspiracy when she took the place of
Roza Galieva in the all-around competition, one for which
she did not qualify. It later became known that Galieva
was not really injured, and though it was apparently not
Gutsu’s idea to take over that part of the competition, the
two of them split the prize earnings and became bitter
acquaintances. Today, Tatiana lives in the United States.

Vitaly Scherbo, men’s all-around champion in 1992, has a
very impressive record. He won an unprecedented six
individual gold medals at the ‘92 Olympics and, all told,
he holds more than fifty medals in total from championships
around the world. Coached by two of the best in the world
-- Leonid Filipenok and Sergei Shinkar, he is truly an
impressive gymnast. Now, with his wife and daughter, Irina
and Kristina respectively, he runs the Vitaly Scherbo

Union. With two Olympic gold medals, a bronze medal and a
silver medal, and more than twenty other medals from
championships around the world, Elena Shushonova has an
illustrious history of gymnastic prowess, and in 2004, she
was added to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame.

Born in the town for which he was named in December of 1964,
Vladimir Artemov came away with the all around gold medal
in the 1988 Olympics. In fact, he came away a champion
several times over, with gold or silver in all of his
events, a truly impressive finish. Trained under Viktor
Firsov at Burevestnik, at that time a part of the Soviet
Union, he also received thirteen other medals in all of his
other endeavors. Now, he lives in the United States with
his wife and children, and is a part of the National
Coaching Staff.
